Literacy and Learning is a collection of Deborah Brandt’s work that focuses on changes in perspectives and perceptions about reading and writing. She describes how literacy skills have become bound up with economic competition and technological change, how basic skills in one generation often prove inadequate for the next—and the tremendous pressure this puts on teachers, families, communities and, most of all, learners. She also introduces the concept of sponsors of literacy—agents, forces, and institutions that stimulate or support people’s literacy strivings for their own economic or political or cultural advantage. Deborah Brandt has dedicated her career to the status of reading and writing in the United States. Her literacy research is well-known and widely studied. The cohesive volume will include an introduction from Dr. Brandt, as well as a previously unpublished, new essay, "The Status of Writing". This piece marks the progression of Dr. Brandt’s interests, and includes a discussion on the various modes of communication available to students today. Other articles (tentatively) include: “Sponsors of Literacy”, “Accumulating Literacy: Writing and Learning to Write in the Twentieth Century", and “Drafting U.S. Literacy”.
