Description
Structured thematically, Nuevos mundos develops the communication and literacy skills of students whose native language is Spanish but have grown up in the United States.  Focusing on the cultures and voices of the major Hispanic groups in the U.S.,  Latin America, and Spain, the text uses literary, cultural, and journalistic readings on thought-provoking issues to raise students' awareness of the diversity of Hispanic cultures while improving their oral proficiency in Spanish.  Activities provide high-interest topics for discussion and written work.  The text encourages class participation as well as community involvement, independent study, and exploration of specific web sites in Spanish to expand on the themes presented in each chapter.  Depending on the abilities of the students, it can be used in intermediate or advanced courses over one or two semesters.  With minor adaptation, the main text can also be used in high-intermediate to advanced Spanish classes for non-native speakers.
