Description
This updated edition of its popular predecessor strikes a balance between the mathematical aspects of the subject and its origin in empirics. It offers, at an elementary level, some of the current topics in applied mathematics such as singular perturbation, nonlinear waves, bifurcation, and the numerical solution of partial differential equations.  New material includes a discussion on discrete models, more applications and material on linear transformations in Rn (matrices, eigenvalues, etc.) to compare to the integral equation results, more references to mathematical biology in the text and exercises (i.e. age-structured models, diffusion and advection, and biology of modeling), and a new chapter on stochastic models including sections on probability, stochastic processes, and stochastic differential equations and difference equations.  This book also features sections on the WKB Approximation and asymptotic expansion of integrals along with expanded chapters on Green's Functions and integral equations.  It includes MATLAB programs and examples from biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering.  The exercises in the book vary from routine calculations designed to reinforce basic techniques to challenging problems that develop advanced problem solving.
