Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition is a scaled-back version of the full product designed as a programming language for beginners and small- to medium-size enterprises. The Express product will be offered free of charge, in part to compete with open-source solutions, such as Perl and PHP, and to appeal to beginners and VB 6 programmers who resisted moving to the .NET platform. Its simplified development environment and new visual tools make it ideal for hobbyists, students, and instructors. VB Express lacks the bells and whistles of the full version and is limited to desktop application development. But when coupled with Visual Web Developer, another new product that's part of the Express suite, VB Express can be used to develop dynamic Internet applications.
