This work provides science educators with a comprehensive selection of high quality instructional resources for enlivening lessons across the science disciplines. It features over 230 classroom-ready activities ranging from word-based problem-solving exercises to hands-on laboratory experiments and includes examples drawn from biology, physics, chemistry and the geosciences. The activities are aimed at developing the students’ proficiency in scientific thinking and methodology as well as their conceptual tools for understanding content across the science curricula. Sections focus on: 1) scientific literacy; 2) scientific reasoning; 3) problem solving, 4) research and inquiry, and 5) knowledge-building methods, with the activities enabling students to gain skills in observation, brainstorming, deductive and inductive reasoning as well as analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Each activity is linked to a particular learning principle or science standard and will include step-by-step instructions, supplies and setup needed, related references, and related background and discussion information. Many activities will include reproducible worksheets. An additional section will focus on motivational activities including games, science humor, classroom warm-ups, and science fair projects. An “instructional” section at the end of the volume summarizes the most important strategies for teaching science, planning lessons, managing the lab process, and for implementing standards-based assessments. The appendix includes tables, templates and other essential references for the science classroom. The work also features a companion website to be designed and updated by the author and providing quickly accessible links to the various national science standards as well as the best in interactive science lessons and curricular resources.
