This book shows school and district leaders how to create ‘professional learning communities’ that can be used to instill educational ideals, share wisdom, and build expertise across the system. Comprised of teachers, school leaders, staff developers, and district personnel, professional learning communities offer a forum to help educators learn from each other, support each other collaboratively, and cultivate a sense of inquiry, intellectual vigor, and other ‘habits of mind' conducive to high performance. Such communities take time to develop, but once established they can be powerful instruments for promoting innovation and professional development in schools. In mapping out the community-building process, the book covers the following topics:
- Developing the vision, mission, and commitment
- Creating conditions for sustaining a learning community
- Developing shared leadership structures
- Involving teachers in leadership roles
- Making the learning community work
- Assessing learning community efforts
Book is based on author’s extensive work consulting with districts and schools on leadership, instruction, and professional development practices. It also features contributions from the Center for the Study of Expertise in Teaching and Learning (CSETL), an organization comprised of teachers, administrators, professional developers, and teacher educators dedicated to building professional capacity.
