This book makes the case for reforming science teaching and advances a new framework for guiding science instruction in the classroom. Unlike conventional “stand and deliver” lecture methods or “follow the recipe” lab routines, the Inquiry/Discovery approach requires students to take initiative in their learning, enabling them to develop critical thinking and investigative skills as well as a deeper understanding of scientific processes. Various approaches for teaching inquiry have been developed, but this particular model is distinctive for linking students to particular learning benchmarks. It's also notable in that it encourages students to generate their own research questions, to determine approaches for seeking answers to their questions, and ultimately to design their own research projects. While the approach is exciting and thrilling for students at all levels of ability, it requires a major shift in the teacher’s role and must be administered gradually based on students’ levels of proficiency. This book shows teachers how to structure lessons, labs, and classroom practices so that true inquiry learning can take place.
