Description
This book shows teachers how to introduce students to the ‘magic’ of creating a complete story in the fantasy/ adventure genre, from generating a theme, to crafting the characters, setting the plotline, and finally bringing the story to fruition. Before fleshing out characters or plotlines, however, students are asked to construct actual maps of their ‘fantasyland’ – and then to write a travelogue describing the setting in great detail. This initial fantasizing stage gives students the liberty (and the tools) to be wildly inventive in creating the drama, ogres, villains, heroes, and heroines featured in their story. On the way students learn about the mythic journey as well as all the writing conventions, including voice, theme, point of view, attention to the reader. Prompts, rubrics, reader response forms, and reproducible worksheets are provided throughout.
