This book addresses three major questions: What do we mean by ‘literacy’? How can it best be achieved through K-12 schooling? And what does it take to get there? To help school and district-based educators in orchestrating effective programs for literacy learning, book proposes a five-part framework: A set of clearly defined literacy attributes that students need to succeed academically (concise expectations for student literacy learning broken down by grade level). 1) Attributes that can be tailored to school or district needs; 2) Instructional contributions that best support students in acquiring the attributes; 3) Informal and formal assessment practices for tracking progress; 4) Report cards that clearly explain progress achieved; 5) Procedures for analyzing achievement data for tailoring curriculum and instruction.
