This book describes an innovative instructional model for using visual arts practices to advance literacy learning. Refined over more than a decade, the model has been proven by research to strengthen reading and writing performance in elementary classrooms, especially with at-risk learners. The book shows teachers how to utilize simple art experiences along with the study of quality picture books to support the writing and reading process. The model features two type of art techniques: 1) Image-Making in the Writing Process (hand-painted collage and textured papers) and 2) Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy through Art (crayon resist painting), both of which are taught through an 'Artists / Writer's Workshop.' The workshop process engages students in studying key elements of a book (e.g., theme, characters, setting) and then in crafting both a pictorial and written response. With the teacher modeling the process, students learn how to brainstorm ideas, acquire new words and revise their work, ultimately producing handsome ‘pictures’ as well as writing that is structured, purposeful, and richly detailed. Having gained access to modes of thought and expression that might otherwise be unavailable through verbal processes, students discover new strengths and confidence for tackling the reading and writing practices. Although quality picture books are initially used in the sessions, the same process can be applied to illustrated literature or content-based textbooks. Contents includes:
- Theoretical rationale for integrating visual and literacy learning approaches.
- Detailed description of teaching methodology
- Strategies for creating art-based literacy lessons in various content areas.
- DVD explaining the art techniques and modeling the process in the classroom.
