Wiley Acquires Whurr Publishers Limited

Chichester, England, April 13, 2005—  John Wiley & Sons, Ltd., announced today that it has completed the acquisition of Whurr Publishers Limited, a London-based publisher of books and journals in Health Sciences and Special Education. The shareholders of Whurr Publishers Limited were represented by The van Tulleken Company. The terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

Whurr is a leading publisher for the Nursing, Speech and Language Therapy and Audiology, Psychology, and Special Education communities in the U.K. The acquisition brings to Wiley a distinguished list of professional reference books, peer-reviewed journals and textbooks (continuing education and postgraduate), with a backlist of over 400 titles, and 45 new books a year. Key titles include Key Nursing Skills; Greene and Mathieson's The Voice and its Disorders; Cochlear Implants International; Criminal Behaviour and Mental Health; Deafness and Education International (published in association with the British Association of Teachers of the Deaf); as well as the Whurr Series in Psychoanalysis, edited by Mary Target and Peter Fonagy; and Professor Maggie Snowling's dyslexia series. Whurr's 2004 revenue was approximately $2 million.

"Whurr's publications have an excellent reputation. We are delighted to have the opportunity to apply Wiley's editorial, sales, and marketing power to extend the development of this important portfolio," said Stephen Smith, Wiley Senior Vice President, International Development, and Publishing Director, Professional/Trade, Wiley Europe. "The acquisition will create numerous synergies, including raising Wiley's profile in the nursing market, especially in the U.K.; adding scale to our behavioral sciences lists; providing a European base for Wiley/Jossey-Bass' special education program; and extending Wiley into the speech therapy and audiology markets."

Colin Whurr said, "I don't think we could have found a better home for our authors and editors than Wiley."
