Stephen M. Smith Promoted to Chief Operating Officer of Wiley Europe Limited


Chichester, England, March 24, 2006—  Dr. John Jarvis, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Wiley Europe Limited, announced today the promotion of Stephen M. Smith to the new role of Chief Operating Officer, effective May 1, 2006. Mr. Smith will assume responsibility for all publishing operations at Wiley Europe Limited, which is part of U.S.-based publisher, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., (NYSE: JWa)(NYSE:JWb). He has served as Wiley Europe's Professional and Trade Publishing Director since 2001, as well as Senior Vice President, International Development, a corporate position he continues to hold, including responsibility for Wiley's businesses in Asia and Australia.

Since he joined Wiley in 1992, Mr. Smith has played a significant role leading the company's successful expansion in Asia's diverse and growing markets. In 1998, he assumed additional responsibility for Wiley Australia. Mr. Smith was appointed a member of the management board of Wiley Europe Limited, in 2000, and has been a member of Wiley's Leadership Team since 1996.

Prior to joining Wiley in 1992, Mr. Smith was President of Simon and Schuster's U.K. Academic and Professional Group, with management responsibility for the European operations of Simon & Schuster and Prentice Hall. Mr. Smith graduated from Oxford Brookes University with a B.S. degree.
