Dr. Mullins finds that, "Many students have poor study habits and are not aware of own their learning styles. The use of various forms of teaching materials helps students to master the material in a manner suitable to them. I believe that guided inquiry is the best model of instruction, and leads to the greatest applied knowledge of course materials. What students discover, they remember."
One way in which Dr. Mullins brings guided inquiry into her classroom is by using online homework assignments in WileyPLUS to gauge student understanding. Working on their own numerically distinct version of a problem leads students to discuss concepts and strategies instead of specific numbers. Based on results, Dr. Mullins initiates a discussion on a certain problem, and then asks students to work a similar problem in class to iron out common errors.
Dr. Mullins has also found CRS systems, or "clickers," to be a valuable tool in giving students receive instant feedback in class and revealing to them the areas in which they need remediation. The real-time assessment provided by clickers enables those students who understood the concepts rapidly instruct those who did not, thus reinforcing their own study.
